Louisville Trivia Helps Fund 200th Fun
LOUISVILLE - A small crowd of residents racked their brains Friday night to remember when the historic town hall was built and which presidents have their faces carved on Mount Rushmore.
The Louisville Bicentennial Planning Committee kicked off their fundraising efforts with a trivia night at the Rod and Gun Club Friday. Funds raised at the event will help defray the cost of putting on this summer's bicentennial festivities.
Town Historian Paula Beattie is helping to spearhead planning for the town's 200th birthday and said things are going smoothly, but that the committee would love to see more members of the community get involved.
"This is our first fundraiser," she said during a break in the trivia contest. "We're also hoping to do a murder mystery event at the end of the month and an Easter breakfast and egg hunt together with the Fire Department on Easter Sunday."
While Easter Monday will technically mark the 200th anniversary of Louisville's founding, the committee is planning to celebrate the landmark event August 13, 14 and 15, when the weather is more likely to be cooperative.
A slide presentation with historical photos and artifacts will be displayed during the Easter breakfast, committee member and Town Clerk Joanne Cameron said.
As for this summer's events, plans are still under way, but the committee is hoping to kick off the August celebration with Friday night ice cream social, followed by a host of Saturday events, including fireman's races, entertainment, games, inflatable play areas for children and a chicken barbecue. Saturday night will culminate with a fireworks display.
On Sunday, a town-wide family picnic is planned at the beach. Ms. Beattie said the town will provide meats while families will bring salads and other goodies to share.
The committee is still looking for more input and volunteers, as well as pictures or artifacts to add to their April and August displays. Those interested in participating can stop by or call the Louisville Town Offices or check out the group on Facebook, where the Louisville Bicentennial Celebration has a page with over 100 fans.
"It's going to be a lot of fun," Ms. Beattie said. "That's the most important thing."
