Alleged Teen Burglar Found Sleeping In Home
MASSENA - A Massena teen was remanded to the St. Lawrence County Correctional Facility Monday night after a Massena man came home to find the 16-year-old had entered the residence, rummaged through several items and was sleeping in an upstairs bedroom.
Massena Village Police said Joshua J. Jones, 16, of 49 1/2 Maple St., Massena, was still asleep when they entered the 13 Haskell St. residence at 4:50 p.m. Monday after receiving the burglary complaint.
Police charged Jones with second-degree burglary and petit larceny. They said Jones was found in possession of a Leatherman's tool, a pocket knife and $8 in rolled coins that had reportedly been taken from the residence.
The homeowner told police when her son returned home from work he immediately noticed the family's possessions had been thrown around in every room. Her son then went upstairs and reportedly found the teenager sleeping in his mother's bed.
Police said when they woke Jones up he appeared to be in some form of medical distress, and they transported him to Massena Memorial Hospital for evaluation after arresting him on the burglary charge.
Jones allegedly became extremely agitated after he had been in the emergency room for a period of time. Police said they repeatedly advised Jones he could not leave the hospital because he was under arrest.
But they said Jones ran out of the hospital at approximately 7 p.m. He was taken into custody moments later on hospital grounds.
He was arraigned by Massena Justice Gerald P. Sharlow and was remanded to the St. Lawrence County Correctional Facility with bail set at $5,000 cash or $10,000 bond.
Jones also reportedly is wanted on a warrant on a petit larceny count from Jefferson County.
