HEUVELTON - The first of what could be several prospective St. Lawrence County treasurer candidates will announce today that he plans to run.

Kevin M. Felt, deputy county treasurer, said he will make his 2 p.m. announcement at the Oswegatchie Town Hall, 51 State St.

"It's something that I've been aspiring to," the Republican said Monday. "This is the level I think is right for me, and it's a position in the North Country, where I come from."

Mr. Felt, a 1991 Heuvelton Central School graduate, said he holds a masters of business administration degree from Clarkson University and a bachelor's degree in business management from SUNY Plattsburgh.

He has held financial officer positions at Mort Backus & Sons, Ogdensburg, at a Microsoft software consulting firm in Rochester and at a Manhattan law firm.

This is Mr. Felt's second year as deputy county treasurer.

"I've already been directly involved with the county's finances for the last year and a half, so I understand the needs the Board of Legislators has in terms of getting information about cash flow and financial analysis to help them make better financial decisions to get us through the economic downturn," he said.

Fellow Republican David T. Button, Canton town supervisor, has said he is also considering a run for treasurer. Mark J. Bellardini, county Democratic Committee chairman, said Friday that party officials are talking to three possible candidates.

County Treasurer Robert O. McNeil announced last week he would not seek another four-year term after holding the post the last 24 years.
