SLCSuper Putman Running For County Seat
CANTON - The St. Lawrence Central school superintendent, a veteran member of the Canton Village Board, announced Monday he is running for the St. Lawrence County Legislature's District 9 seat.
Stephen M. Putman, a Democrat, says he's qualified to succeed long-time Democrat legislator Peter W. FitzRandolph in the Canton legislative seat.
"I think the county is a large business and employer that has a big impact on people's lives," stated Mr. Putman, who has served as village trustee since December 2002.
Mr. FitzRandolph announced last week he will not be seeking re-election this November.
The District 9 seat represents the villages of Canton and Rensselaer Falls and a portion of the town of Canton.
"I am looking to represent a district where I know the electorate very well," he said.
Mr. Putman is the superintendent of schools for the St. Lawrence Central School District. He notes he will bring a diverse resume to the county legislative table, with expertise in budget analysis and development.
"Tax revenues are off and significant pieces of the budget are out of the county's control," he said. "Interfacing with state legislators to deal with unfunded mandates will be important."
Mr. Putman and his wife, Marcia, reside in Canton.
