Chester S. Dywan
MASSENA - Chester S. Dywan, 83, of 101 Jefferson Ave., Massena, died unexpectedly Sunday morning (March 7, 2010) at his home.
A Mass of Resurrection will be held Friday at 10 a.m. at St. Mary's Church with Rev. Michael Gaffney presiding. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery.
Friends and family are invited to call Thursday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the Phillips Memorial Home, Massena. The Knights of Columbus Council No. 1141 will call Thursday at 3:30 p.m. at the funeral home and the VFW No. 1143 will pay their respects Thursday at 7:15 p.m.
Surviving Chester S. Dywan are his wife, June; three daughters, Mrs. George (Marcia) Cox of Parishville, Mrs. Fred (Monica) McLaughlin of Louisville and Mrs. Daniel (Christine) Cecot of Louisville; a son, Nicholas of Loveland, Colo.; 18 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; three sisters, Lillian Ruooco, Corning, Mary Jones, Sophie Kelly, and two brothers, Andrew Dywan, all of Ninety-Six, N.C., and Zigmond of Massena. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Mr. Dywan was predeceased by two brothers, Joseph and Theodore; and a sister, Jennie Downey.
He was born on Dec. 3, 1926 in Massena, the son of Joseph and Jennie (Mazur) Dywan. He was a graduate of Massena High School.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. Following his discharge he was employed at Alcoa as a millwright until he was laid of in 1954. He joined the St. Lawrence Seaway Development Corporation and retired as a shift superintendent in 1982.
He married the former June Laraby on Sept. 26, 1953 at the Church of the Sacred Heart with Rev. John Pendergast presiding.
Mr. Dywan was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council No. 1141 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 1443.
Mr. Dywan enjoyed his family, reading, gardening, crossword puzzles, and making and refinishing furniture in his spare time.
Memorials may be made to St. Mary's Sanctuary Fund.
