The Clarkson University baseball team saw opening day spoiled by rain while St. Lawrence University held off North Park College 3-2 on Thursday.

Both squads are in Florida for the week getting ready for their North Country seasons.

KNIGHTS POSTPONED

The defending Liberty League champions were slated to get the season underway against Mount St. Mary at the Disney complex in central Florida but the game was rained out following pre-game thanks to a heavy rain across the Orlando region..

The game will likely not be made up, making this afternoon's doubleheader against Pitt-Greensburg the season-opener for the Golden Knights. The first game is scheduled to begin at noon.

SLU MOVES TO 5-1

Meanwhile at the Gene Cusic Classic, the Saints continued their strong start to the season as Chris Cook struck out five and walked one, allowing one run and Kyle Donaldson pitched three solid innings in relief to help carry SLU to past North Park..

The Saints, now 5-1 on their southern trip, beat North Park's Mike Giovenko, who was 2-0 going into the game and was a Minnesota Twins draft choice last year.

Ethan Braddock went 2-3 for the Saints, Ryan Duff 1-4 with an RBI and Matt DeLuca and Kirk Shimkin each went one for three with a run scored. The Saints scored twice in the seventh to take a 3-1 lead, one of the runs coming home on a suicide squeeze bunt by Carter Franz.

Donaldson walked one and struck out one in earning the save for the Saints.

SLU will play Scranton Friday before wrapping up their southern trip on Saturday against Dominican.
