Coleman Continues Hot Springin CULoss
WINTER HAVEN, FL - Sophomore Jerry Coleman (Potsdam) continued a ridiculous start to the 2010 season for the Clarkson University baseball team, going 3-4 and starting a two-out rally in the third inning but the Golden Knights offense couldn't keep up with Stevens Institute of Technology, falling 11-3 Monday afternoon at the Chain O Lakes complex.
The Golden Knights fell to 1-4 on their spring trip, and will close out the series against Transylvania (KY) on Tuesday with a doubleheader.
Unlike the previous two games, Clarkson and its opponent did not come out strong offensively. Neither team scored for the first two innings, but the Knights broke through with three runs in the bottom of the third inning. Coleman bounced a two-out single through the middle and reached second on a single byMatt Curry (Richland). Brady Torbitt (Fulton) singled home Coleman and then David Kinney (Mexico) followed with a two-run single to give Clarkson a 3-0 lead. However, the Knights' offense produced only three more hits for the remainder of the contest (two for Coleman, one for Kinney).
Stevens solved Clarkson's starter, Kinney, in the fifth inning, scoring four runs to take the lead. The Ducks added three in the seventh and four in the eighth to put the game out of reach.
Coleman went 3-4 and is now batting .700 on the season (14-20). Kinney went 2-4 and also added five strikeouts in six and one-third innings pitched.
CU LAXWOMEN PREVAIL
Freshman Alyssa Cristaldi (North Syracuse) enjoyed an impressive debut for the Clarkson University womens lacrosse team as she came within one goal of tying the program's record for most goals in a game, tallying eight in the Golden Knights' 19-15 victory over Keene State in the season opener in Florida on Monday afternoon.
Five Knights accounted for all of the scoring as Clarkson jumped out to a 10-6 first-half lead en route to its highest goal output in two seasons. Rookie Katie VanDeValk (Baldwinsville) also made a strong showing in her first collegiate game with a four-goal effort. Senior Kimberly Loucks (Waterloo) and sophomore Laura Barlow (Latham) chipped in three goals each, while freshman Kerrie Cline (Tuxedo) added a single tally.
Sophomore Hannah Walters (Amherst, NH) made 20 saves for the Green and Gold.
Freshman Morgan McGowan (Stony Point) picked up a team-high three groundballs for the Knights.
