Fr. George William Tobin
Fr. George William Tobin, 84, died August 25, 2010, at his home in Plattsburgh, NY. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, August 30, 2010 at St. Mary's of the Lake at 10 a.m. with Most Reverend Terry R. LaValley, Bishop of Ogdensburg presiding, and the priests of the diocese concelebrating. The homilist will be Msgr. Joseph Aubin, retired priest and good friend of the deceased.
Calling hours will be at St. Mary's of the Lake, Cumberland Head on Sunday, August 29th from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. and viewing, also at St. Mary's, on Monday , August 30 from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. Msgr. Leeward Poissant, Dean of Clinton Deanery, will lead a prayer service at 7 p.m. Burial will be in St. Patrick's Cemetery in Chateaugay, NY at the convenience of the family. Arrangements are with Brown Funeral Home in Plattsburgh, NY
Fr. Tobin was born in Chateaugay, NY November 22, 1925 son of the late Harold D. and Margaret A. Hartnett Tobin. He attended school in Chateaugay until he entered Wadhams Hall in 1943. His theological studies were at St. Augustine's Seminary in Toronto, Canada. He was ordained a priest on June 3, 1950 by Bishop Bryan J. McEntegart.
Fr. Tobin's first assignment was as assistant in Tupper Lake, St. Anthony's in Watertown, St. John's in Plattsburgh, St. Bernard's in Lyon Mountain, and St. Joseph's in Massena. In 1964 Father Tobin was named pastor in Louisville and also served on the faculty of Holy Family High School in Massena. In 1971 he was named pastor in Holy Name, AuSable Forks, in 1977, pastor of St Josephís in Malone, in 1984 pastor of St. Mary's of the Lake, Cumberland Head and in 1992, St. James, Cadyville.
In 2000, Fr. Tobin retired, spent some time in the Carolinas and, most recently, lived in Plattsburgh.
Throughout his life as a priest, Fr. Tobin had a real care and concern for the Deaf. He was named Director of Apostolate for the Deaf and was fluent in sign language.
Fr. Tobin is predeceased by his sisters Mercedes and Arnold LaFountain, Pauline and Joseph Reis, Lucille and Charles Picard, Eileen and Everett Woodward as well as several nieces and nephews, Mercie Koppenaal, Jody Connors, Susan Smart, Robert LaFountain and Michael Woodward.
