Lady Shamrocks Drop Opener
OGDENSBURG - The Salmon River Central varsity girls soccer team opened the 2010 season with a hard-fought 2-1 loss to host OFA on Monday in the first round of the Lady Blue Devils annual pre-season tournament.
After withstanding a penalty shot with just under 10 minutes remaining in the first half when netminder Amanda Reyome made a diving save to her right to deny a low drive delivered by Jessica Denoncourt, the Lady Shamrocks opened the scoring on a long range goal by Karyss Terrance seven minutes into the second half.
OFA tied the game with 16:44 left in regulation when Chelsea Martin broke through for the first of her two breakaway goals just five minutes apart that wound up being the difference on the scoreboard. She converted on a midfield turnover for the equalizer then chased down a chip pass over the defense by Caily Arquitt for the eventual game-winner with less than 11 minutes remaining.
Reyome finished with 11 saves for the Lady Shamrocks and Allysha Bracy did likewise working the OFA crease.
The Lady Shamrocks will now seek consolation honors tonight against Lisbon starting at 6 p.m. Lisbon fell to Heuvelton 3-0 in the other first round game. OFA and Heuvelton meet in the tournament final at 8 p.m.
Heuvelton 3, Lisbon 0: The tournament opener saw Heuvelton break open a close game with two goals just five minutes apart early in the second half in a game that also served as the NAC West Division debut for both squads.
Sara Sloan oepned the scoring in the final minute of the first half off an assist from Ashlyn Piercey. Sloan then set up the first of two goals by Alexis Weidner in the 50th and 55th minutes of the second that put the game out of reach.
Sanna Jaquith handled the four shots she faced in backstopping the shutout while Jackie Sovie posted nine saves in the setback.
