WADDINGTON - Frances E. Wikel 90, of Waddington passed away Friday (Aug. 27. 2010) in Burlington, Vt., surrounded by her family at Fletcher Allen-Medical Care.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 10 a.m. at the Phillips Memorial Home, Waddington, with Lay Pastor Martha Helmer presiding. Internment will be held at Brookside Cemetery, Waddington, following the funeral service.

Frances is survived by three daughters, Frances Ernestine Smith and Darlene Middlemiss and husband Gary, both of Waddington, and Dee Dee Wikel Brubacher and husband Robert of Wappingers Falls; one son, Ernest John Wikel Jr. and wWife Andrea of Sacramento, Calif.; one sister, Chick Dietz of Florida;13 grandchildren, Chuck, Gail, Melissa , A.J., Ryan, Kelly, Jennifer , P.J. Jon, Scott, Sherrie, Debbie and Cassandra; 19 great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren.

Frances was predeceased by her husband, Ernest John Wikel Sr.; her parents, Fred and Ethel May Vickery; a sister, Ethel Schwark; a daughter, Gail Webster Jones; and a son Gye Wikel.

Frances graduated as the valedictorian from Roosevelt High School in Yonkers in 1937. She went on to obtain an associate's degree from Hunter College in New York City.

She married Ernest John Wikel Sr. on April 15 1942 in Yonkers.

She was was employed as a waitress and bookkeeper at DG's Country Kitchen in Rensselaer Falls and The University Restaurant in Tampa, Fla., where she received the Waitress of the Year award.

She later was employed as a manager of the Rug Center in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. She was also employed as a waitress at the Edge of Town Restaurant in Ogdensburg and the Hilton Inn in Rye.

Frances enjoyed reading, gardening, scrapbooking, cross-stitching and was a whiz on the computer Facebooking with friends and family.

She was a member of the Red Hat Society and also belonged to the Senior Citizens of Waddington, where she was a secretary.

She also spent time as a Girl Scout leader of Troop 321 and as a Brownie leader and was a member of TOPS (KOPS). She was also involved with a bowling team and sewing circle.
