CANTON - Senior Stephanie Collins (Colton) tied a career-high with 16 saves for the Clarkson University womens soccer team, but she wasn't able to stop all of the opponent's chances as SUNY Geneseo defeated the Golden Knights 5-0 in the nightcap of the 2010 Lotto Tournament hosted by St. Lawrence University on Friday afternoon.

The Golden Knights saw their record evened at 1-1 overall, while Geneseo started the season with the victory. Clarkson will play Lasell College tomorrow afternoon.

The Golden Knights trailed 1-0 at the half, but had been outshot 20-4 in the opening 45 minutes. Collins was able to keep Clarkson in the game, making 10 stops in the first half.

In the second half, Geneseo opened things up with goals in the 49th and 50th minutes, before tacking on extra scores in the 65th and 89th minutes.

SLU 2, Lasell 0: The Lady Saints scored goals just under nine minutes apart in the first half and made them stand for the win in the other first round game.

Freshman Erika Gobielle opened the scoring for the Saints at 20:38 when she took a short pass from junior Marcelle Justison and rifled a shot past Lasell goalie Elziabeth Stickley from point blank range. Justison started the game's first scoring play when her shot went off the post and came right back to her. She controlled the rebound in the box and tapped it ahead to Gobielle for the goal.

Sophomore Stephanie Sayward made it a 2-0 game at the 29:09 mark when she took a nice feed from junior Elena Rogers and rifled a shot into the upper left corner from right in front.

The Saints dominated play in the game and had a chance to score in the first minute when Justison broke in alone, but Stickley beat her to the ball to deny a goal. Lasell's Jamie Osterberg also picked a shot by Sayward off the goal line in the first five minutes of play and Justison had a curving shot saved by Stickney just inside the post.

Saint goalie Abby van Geldern needed just four saves, two in each half, to record the shutout while Stickney finished with nine saves for the Lasers.

SLU will play Geneseo in the second game of the tournament today at 1 p.m.

All the tournament action is taking place on Sandy MacAllaster Field.
