ATTEMPTED ROBBERY - Village police charged John C. Welcher, 31, of 225 East Orvis St., Apt. 3, Massena, with third-degree attempted robbery and third-degree assault Tuesday afternoon stemming from an investigation into an incident that allegedly took place Aug. 24 on Grinnell Avenue.
Police said Welcher allegedly knocked James W. Pratt to the ground, punched him and attempted to remove cash and prescription drugs from his front pocket during the incident at 10:40 p.m. Aug. 24.
Pratt reportedly was able to fight off his attacker and escape from the area.
Welcher was arraigned by Massena Village Justice Eric J. Gustafson and was remanded to the St. Lawrence County Correctional Facility with bail set at $1,000 cash or $2,000 bond.
