Pelkey Starts New Post
BRASHER FALLS - It was the opening day of school and, like some students arriving at St. Lawrence Central elementary School, it was a brand new experience for Principal Brandon J. Pelkey, too.
Mr. Pelkey, a high school biology teacher at Franklin Academy in Malone, was appointed this summer to take over as interim principal for one year at St. Lawrence Central, effective mid-August.
After receiving a one-year leave of absence in Malone, he's taking over for Lisa Grenville until June 30, 2011. Mrs. Grenville will spend the next year as a half-time committee on special education chairperson, allowing her to spend more time with her family.
"It was a great opportunity for me," Mr. Pelkey said.
Although he's officially been on the job since mid-August, opening day for students was also his opening day at the school. Even before the students arrived, Mr. Pelkey said he was looking forward to the experience.
"I think it's just the energy in the building. They're eager to learn. Young kids always come in full of energy. You don't always see that at the high school. I look forward to their enthusiasm and their eagerness to learn," he said.
The day started off on a bright note, according to the principal.
"So far, so good. I walked in and already saw kids in the cafeteria. One of them said, 'Hey, there's Mr. Pelkey,'" he said.
Mr. Pelkey, who has been teaching for 15 years and is certified in elementary education and science, said he was also looking forward to working with the elementary faculty and staff members.
"They're a great group to work with.
One of the challenges, he said, would be changing his train of thought from high school biology to elementary supervision. But he had help at home, Mr. Pelkey said.
Elementary is much different than the high school level. My last elementary job was when I student taught," he said. "My wife is an elementary school teacher. I have a great support network at home. I can bounce ideas off her."
Since it's a one-year position, after which he'll return to Franklin Academy, Mr. Pelkey said he doesn't plan to make any changes at the elementary school. He met with Mrs. Grenville several times over the summer to discuss his position.
"Being a one-year position, my goal is to continue what Lisa Grenville did. She did an outstanding job. Who am I to try and change things when they're working so well? She's been in the position for five or six years. She's a great asset," he said.
