Potsdam Swims Past Gouverneur
Potsdam Central pulled away from Gouverneur while Salmon River fell to Franklin Academy as the NAC varsity girls swimming season got underway on Tuesday.
Potsdam 125, Gouverneur 42: At Gouverneur Central, the defending regular season Division I champions used a balanced effort to generate wins in all but one event against the Wildcats.
"This was a nice meet to open the season with. Some of the younger swimmers got a chance to shine and the returning swimmers got a chance to try some different events," said coach Michelle Garrow after the Lady Sandstoners officially extended their undefeated streak into the 2010 season.
Liz Dempsey emerged as the leading individual scorer for Potsdam with wins in the 50 freestyle (30.45 seconds) and 100 butterfly (1:12.78). Also posting solo firsts were: Abby Scott in the 200 freestyle with a time of 2:44.04, Shanielle Chambers in the 200IM with a time of 2:59.21, Britney Charleston in the 100 freestyle with a time of 1:13.67, Sarah Roll in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:14.18 and Allyssa Chambers in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:21.25.
The Lady Sandstoners also won all three relay races. Roll combined with Allyssa Chambers, Kiona Loran and Kelsey Sixberry to capture the 200 medley relay in 2:23.34. The quartet of Charleston, Ariana Frascatore, Gina Lomastro and Michaela Bartlett led the 200 freestyle relay in 2:05.89. Scott and Bartlett closed out the meet by teaming up with Kaylee Peck and Danielle Sinnigen to claim the 400 freestyle relay in 4:55.85.
Bridgett Terpstra kept the meet from being a complete Potsdam sweep by pacing the 500 freestyle in 7:46.77.
The Lady Sandstoners will now get set to host Division I rival Massena on Friday at the Clarkson University pool starting at 4:30 p.m.
"That's going to be an incredible meet," Garrow suggested.
FA 62, Salmon River 31: In Malone, Sierra Delormier played a lead role in the losing cause for the visiting Lady Shamrocks. She accounted for the only two individual wins of the meet for Salmon River, pacing the 200 freestyle in 2:18.65 and the 100 backstroke in 1:11.86. Delormier also teamed up with Sydney Jacobs, Raven LeMay and Erica Francis to capture the 200 freestyle relay in 1:58.79.
