Lady Raiders Hand FA1st Central Loss; SRDrops Canton
MASSENA - The Massena Central varsity girls basketball team handed Franklin Academy its first league loss while OFA fell to Gouverneur in the two NAC Central Division games played on Monday.
Massena 41, FA 29: After trading leads with the Lady Huskies through the first three quarters, the Lady Raiders put together a 14-4 run in the fourth to earn the win and close the gap in the race for top spot in the Central Division.
Alisha Jacobs led all scorers with 15 points, including a pair of three-pointers, while grabbing five rebounds and notching three steals to anchor the Massena effort. Marissa Truax also made lead all-around contributions with 10 points, 13 rebounds and three blocked shots. Marissa Manley worked the paint for nine points and another 13 boards. Kallie Barnes fashioned three points and four assists. Dominique Valancius and Megan Poupore closed out the Lady Raider scoresheet with two points each.
Morgan Fountain paced FA with 11 points and seven rebounds. Katie Tatro chipped in eight points followed by Katie Lavoie (9 rebounds) with seven, Bridget Gravel with two and Rachel Lamica with one as the Lady Huskies slipped to 5-1 in the Central and 11-3 overall.
The Lady Raiders improved to 4-1 in the division and 11-3 overall as they get set to travel to Fort Covington on Thursday to take on Salmon River.
FA JV's 38, Massena JV's 33: Samanntha Villnave netted 12 points and grabbed eight rebounds in the losing cause as the junior Lady Raiders battled back from a 24-14 halftime deficit before giving way to a late FA run. Robin Boudreau added six points, six rebounds and five steals while Maeve Curran generated four points, five rebounds and six takeaways.
Jordyn Bilow led FA with 10 points while Meghan O'Connor dominated the paint for 17 rebounds in an eight-point effort.
Gouverneur 50, OFA 49: Kirstin Roberts and Megan Morrow combined for 21 and 10 points and Jaelyn Gotham also connected for 10 points as the Wildcats used a stellar defensive effort to reverse an earier loss to OFA.
"We played much better defense than we did in the first game," said Gouverneur Coach Rick Vroman after the Lady Wildcats prevailed with an 18-9 advantage in the third quarter.
Megan Dodge netted 17 points to lead the Blue Devils and Mackenzie Cole and Felicia Barr followed with 15 and 13. Two points from Riley Luckie and Brooke Badlam rounded out the scoring.
Gouverneur (3-11, 1-3 Central) gained its first division win in the contest where 6-9 OFA slipped to 2-4 in the Central Division.
NORTH DIVISION
The only North Division game played on Monday saw Salmon River relay the momentum of a strong start into a 54-37 win on the road over Canton Central.
Abby Kelly tossed through a game-high 21 points as the Lady Shamrocks ran out to a 15-5 lead by the end of the first quarter then took control with a 17-10 third-quarter run. Karyss Terrance tallied 14 points followed by Anna Kelly with eight, Rylie Mainville with six, Jaiden Mitchell with three and Breanna Jock with two as the Lady Shamrocks improved to 5-0 atop the North Division standings and 11-3 overall.
Emily Rexford paced Canton (7-8, 3-3) with 15 points. Katie Murray and Emily Pickney added five points apiece. Rachel Sanderson and Taylor Reed both netted three followed by Jamie DiSalvo with two and Sherry Peck with one.
INTERDIVISIONAL
In the only interdivisional matchup on Monday, Jessica Jacques fired through 36 points to lead Brushton-Moira to a 51-39 decision on the road over Potsdam.
Jacques scored all eight of her team's point in the third quarter then sparked a decisive 18-11 run in the fourth. Sandra Martin added eight points toward the win followed by Brooke Boyea with four, Haylea Gary with two and Caitlyn Lapage with one as B-M improved to 7-6 overall.
For the Lady Sandstoners (3-11), Sarah Vivlamore netted 15 points followed by Mallory Fisher with nine, Shanielle Chambers with eight, Breanna Sapp with five and Taylor Bonno.
The Lady Sandstoners return to action this evening with an interdivisional game on the road against Norwood-Norfolk starting at 7:30 p.m. The varsity boys teams will square off in the first game of the mixed twinbill starting at 5:30 p.m
