SLU Gets Back In Win Column With OT Goal At Yale
NEW HAVEN, Conn. — St. Lawrence University won a conference game for the first time since Nov. 19, defeating Yale, 4-3, in overtime in ECAC Hockey on Friday.
The Saints (9-15-3 overall, 5-9-1 ECAC) had lost or tied eight straight conference games. They hadn’t won a game at all since Jan. 6.
That changed with a dramatic power-play goal by Greg Carey 2 minutes, 25 seconds into overtime. Carey has six goals and nine points in seven career games against Yale (9-11-2, 6-8-1). His overtime winner is the first game-winner of the season.
It also salvaged what had once appeared to be a St. Lawrence win.
“Getting the win is huge,” associate head coach Mike Hurlbut said. “We played our best game in quite some time and coming away with less than two (conference) points would have been disappointing. This is one we can build on and get a roll going at the right time of the year.”
Carey started a streak of three unanswered goals with a score at 16:26 of the first to tie it at 1-1.
Jacob Drewiske and Chris Martin followed with scores at 2:14 and 10:15 of the second period, respectively.
But Chad Ziegler pulled the struggling Bulldogs within 3-2 with a goal at 8:06 of the third. The Saints, unable to get another insurance score, had to endure an extra attacker for the final minute.
Kenny Agostino beat SLU goalie Matt Weninger on a two-on-one breakaway, banking in the shot off the crossbar at 19:25 to effectively send the game to overtime.
SLU has been outscored in the third period, 39-15, this season. However, SLU is 2-1-3 in overtime games.
Yale lost in similar fashion to Clarkson on Jan. 15 at Cheel Arena in Potsdam. The Bulldogs took a penalty early into the overtime and Clarkson scored five seconds later. The ensuing tirade from Yale coach Keith Allain earned him a written reprimand from the conference.
The two points St. Lawrence desperately needed gives the Saints 11 points, moving into 11th place in ECAC Hockey. Yale is tied with Princeton in eight place at 13 points.
Weninger had 31 saves.
