It's another nice Knight on the road
PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Paul Karpowich stopped 40 of 41 shots, including one on a penalty shot, to help the Clarkson University men’s hockey team claim a 3-1 win over Brown in an ECAC Hockey game Friday night at Meehan Auditorium.
Clarkson (13-11-5 overall, 7-5-3 conference) moved into a third-place tie with Colgate, when going by win percentage, after the win.
The Golden Knights built a 3-0 lead, then held off a Brown surge as the Bears (8-11-3, 5-8-2) outshot Clarkson 32-8 over the final two periods.
“It was a tale of two games,” Clarkson coach Casey Jones said. “I thought we were really good early. They had momentum after they scored a power-play goal.”
For a second straight game Norwood native Alex Boak gave Clarkson an early lead in a road game, scoring at 2 minutes, 19 seconds of the first period. Ben Sexton picked up the first of three assists on the score and Allan McPherson also assisted on the goal.
The Golden Knights extended the lead to 2-0 when Sexton set up a goal for freshman Patrick Marsh at 12:02 of the opening period.
“I thought he had a couple nice (assists),” Jones said of Sexton. “He’s an important guy for us.”
Brown got some pressure on Clarkson early in the second period, but it was the Golden Knights who struck first as senior Nick Tremblay scored his 14th goal of the season on a power play at 5:12 to make it 3-0. Sexton and Louke Oakley assisted on the goals. The Bears finally got a goal at 13:56 of the second period during a power play of their own when Jack Maclellan scoring his 11th goal of the season from Bobby Farnham and Jeff Buvinow. That goal sparked Brown’s offense and propelled the Bears to their second- and third-period shot dominance.
Brown had a possible goal waved off in the second period when a referee’s whistle blew before the puck crossed the line. Farnham took a penalty shot midway through the second period, but Karpowich stuffed it.
Clarkson is now 5-1-2 in its last eight conference games and improved to 5-3-4 in road games.
