DANBURY, Conn. - A 2-2 first intermission tie faded into a 7-3 Federal Hockey League loss on the road to Danbury for the Akwesasne Warriors on Friday night.
Danbury opened a 2-0 lead on goals by James Kirkwood and Adam Houli before the Warriors battled back with a pair of goals over the final five minutes. Jean Rene Forget got Akwesasne on the board at the 15:00 mark from Sylvain Deschatelets and Pierre Dagenais. Dagenais pulled the Warriors even with a power play goal set up by Deschatelets with 1:02 remaining in the opening frame.
Danbury struck for two goals in the first 1:25 of the second period then went ahead 5-2 at the 9:34 mark before the Warriors slowed the momentum at 9:34 when Kris McCarthy finished off a play set up by Ahmed Mahfouz and Jeremy Van Hoof. Danbury countered with the final two goals of the game over the final four minutes of the second period.
James Sanford generated two goals and two assists in the winning effort while Kirkwood finished with two goals and one helper. Andrew Willock contributed a goal and three assists. Peter Vetri turned aside 29 of the shots he faced backstopping the win.
Adam Thomspon (15 saves) and Alexandre Vincent (17 saves) combined to work the Akwesasne crease.
The Warriors close out their three-game road trip tonight at FHL leading New Jersey starting at 7:35 p.m. before closing out the regular season next weekend with three straight home games.
