Gary Gilbert feel in love with the game of golf as a youngster and spent many years working in the golf industry in different parts of country.
Last summer, an opportunity arose for Gilbert and his father, Ed Gilbert, to purchase the former Deerfield Golf Club and the Inn on the Greens on the Taylor Road just outside of the Village Heuvelton. The two businessmen renamed the course the Gilbert Greens Country Club and are hoping to open on April 15.
Aided by invaluable help from a group of friends, the Gilberts spent last summer and fall reclaiming the course from nature and the greens were reseeded and professionally reconditioned in the fall. The putting green at the course has been restored and a driving range has been created in an area of the course behind the Inn on the Greens.
The Inn on the Green was leased last year by Dr.Jack Zeh and will continue under the direction of the present management.
I couldnt ask for a better job, that is for sure. The course came through the winter pretty well. We plan to open in the middle of April, with carts, and we will definitely have 18 holes available within a couple of weeks said Gary Gilbert on Saturday from the Gilbert Greens booth at the Ogdensburg Boys and Girls Clubs Expo 2012 .I want the course to be a place where the high handicapper and the low handicapper can both feel right at home. We want to offer people a place to enjoy the game of the golf and then go and have something to drink and something to eat at the inn which is a great place to watch sports on TV. The irrigation system is ready to go and all of fairways and greens will be watered.
Family will also be a theme for the management of the course.
Ed Gilberts wife, Oraanne, and Gary Gilberts wife Tammy and their children, Thomas and Benjamin, will all be involved in the operations.
This is definitely going to be a family run business and we want to be involved in the communities, said Ed Gilbert.
That community spirit was evident this weekend where a Gilbert Greens Country Club membership was donated for the OBGC Expo fund-raising raffle. Also, anyone who purchases a membership this weekend at Expo will have a chance to get their money back in a drawing today at the close of the activities at the Golden Dome.
