CANTON - A high speed police pursuit ended in a driving while intoxicated arrest for a Chateaugay man on Saturday afternoon.
St. Lawrence County Sherriffs Deputies said Nathan J. Johnston, 25, was seen speeding 105 miles per hour on his 2009 Suzuki motorcycle in a 55 mph zone at approximately 2 p.m. on county route 27 in the town of Canton.
Sheriffs deputies said Johnston refused to stop and continued driving in a reckless manner, weaving in and out of traffic and passing vehicles on the right hand side of the roadway.
Johnston finally stopped his motorcycle on Riverside Drive in the village of Canton with the assistance of the village police department. Deputies said there was a strong odor of alcohol on Mr. Johnston, who registered a 0.21 blood alcohol content at the sheriffs office. The legal BAC limit for driving a vehicle in New York state is 0.08 percent.
He was charged with third degree unlawfully fleeing a police officer, and aggravated driving while intoxicated, both class A misdemeanors, as well as reckless driving, speeding 105 mph in a 55 zone, failure to comply, operating out of class and improper passing. Johnston was issued appearance tickets and released to a family member.
