CANTON A 13-year sergeant in the police department is the new police chief.
The village Board of Trustees selected Basil W. Chaney to succeed retiring Police Chief Alan P. Mulkin on Wednesday night. The provisional appointment will keep Mr. Chaney in the chiefs post until the next police chiefs examination is held in March.
Mr. Mulkin announced his retirement last month after heading the Police Department for 18 years. His last day will be April 27.
We appreciate Chief Mulkins tenure as police chief, Mayor David P. Curry said.
Mr. Chaney will assume the chiefs duties April 28.
The board conducted interviews and was thoroughly impressed by the pool of applicants, the mayor said. This was a very difficult decision for us due to the caliber of the candidates. Basils a good cop and a good sergeant. Hes all for Canton and does what is good for the people.
Mr. Chaney was unavailable for comment.
Mr. Chaney was one of three candidates interviewed Tuesday.
