POTSDAM - While the hockey season may be over, honors are still coming in for the Potsdam Ice Storm girls hockey team.
The Potsdam Town Board unanimously passed a resolution this week in honor of the team, which recently finished third in the national championship tournament. The team dropped an overtime decision to a team fromn San Jose, Calif., in the tournament semi-finals held in Dallas.
In the 1980s, we had a girls team who came second in the state, Town Supervisor Marie C. Regan said. There are so many opportunities for girls now.
The team is made up of girls 16 and under from all over St. Lawrence County, including Councilman Michael J. Zagrobelnys daughter, Zoe. Mr. Zagrobelny seconded the motion, which was made by Ms. Regan.
The motion noted the Potsdam Ice Storm 16U team had been in the state tournament finals for five consecutive years - earning second place finishes in three of the past five years before earning the crown this year.
The greater North Country community rallies behind this team to provide much needed funding and support for the trip to Irving, Texas and national tournament, the resolution noted.
The team scored victories over the San Jose Sharks, Mountain States Rock Stars, Connecticut Polar Bears and Irving Alliance before their overtime loss in a rematch with San Jose. I dont think a lot of people from Potsdam understand what they accomplished, Ms. Regan said.
Assistant Coach Rick Miller, who was at the meeting with Coach Christin Powers, explained the state championship banner will be hung from the rafters at the Pine Street Arena, while the teams trophies will be on display in the arenas trophy case.
The players and coaches each have a bronze medal just like they would at the Olympics, Mr. Miller said.
The resolution also mentioned several characteristics of the team.
The Ice Storms fierce competitiveness, resiliency in the face of defeat and characteristic sportsmanship brought honor and recognition to Potsdam, NY on a national stage.
The team members included Margaret Troiano, Jordyn Clothier, Allison Miller, Megan Plumb, Kady Hart, Bailey Dillabough, Jennifer Tardelli, Sierra Gagnon, Nicole Holmes, Chelsea Streeter, Colleen Besaw, Kelley Paduano, MacKenzie Comeau, Madalyn Dillabough, Megan Hans, Shannon Casey and Zoe Zagrobelny. The teams coaching staff also included John Hart, who was not present at the meeting.
