A state prison inmate admitted Thursday that he caused the death of another inmate during a fight in July at Cape Vincent Correctional Facility.
Erick S. Minott, 20, now an inmate at Upstate Correctional Facility, pleaded guilty in Jefferson County Court to criminally negligent homicide and second-degree attempted assault.
Calling the situation avoidable, Minott told state Supreme Court Judge James P. McClusky, who was acting as County Court judge, that he was fighting July 22 with Jorge Morillo and that, while he intended to injure Mr. Morillo, had no intention of killing him. Mr. Morillo, 31, Bronx, fell during the altercation and struck his head against a hard surface, causing a blood clot on his brain that resulted in his death.
Minott faces an additional two to four years in prison at sentencing July 24.
