Nightengale Neighbors plan 5k run, family walk

MASSENA - If preregistration numbers are any indication, members of the Nightengale Neighbors Parent Teacher Organization are anticipating a good crowd for Saturday’s second annual Pick Up the Pace Nighthawk 5K Race and Family Walk.

“Based on registration this year for racers, we do have more than we did last year. We have probably about 50 racers and families registered,” Nightengale Neighbors President Liz Trego said.

“We do have several people signed up for the race part of it this year. It’s quite a competition this year between people. Races like this take time, so you get more people each year,” she said.

Ms. Trego, who is working with Michelle Trimboli in coordinating the event, said it’s a fundraiser for the PTO, as well as an opportunity for families to spend some quality time together.

“The Nightengale Neighbors PTO started it as a fundraiser, but also as a way of getting parents involved with their kids in a healthy way. We thought, what better way than to be outside in the air. The race is a great way for families to get out and get active together,” she said.

The 5K run will be take place on the streets, while the family walk will be held on the John Story Trail, which circles the Nightengale Elementary and Massena High School campus.

“Families can walk the trail or run the course which is through the streets. If you walk (the trail) twice it’s approximately 5K. The focus is being active as a family and setting good examples for our kids,” Ms. Trego said.

Besides focusing on the family, the event also serves as a fundraiser for the Nightengale Neighbors, she said.

“It’s just a fun way for us to earn a little bit of money and get people out there exercising and spending time with their kids,” she said.

Preregistration for the family walk is $20 for the entire family or $25 on Saturday. Preregistration for the race is $15 per person or $20 the day of the race.

The first 100 5K registrations or one per family will receive special Nighthawk Race T-shirts, and there will be prizes for the top runners.

The race is named is recognition of the school’s nickname, the Nightengale Nighthawks.

Last year’s inaugural event raised money for new playground equipment for younger students in the school’s pre-kindergarten and junior kindergarten classrooms.

The group has also used money to install a new sound system in the school for assemblies, concerts and other events, Ms. Trego said.

They also host events throughout the year, such as Teacher Appreciation Day, and contribute to the Reading is Fundamental program.

“We also do a play day in June, which is an all-day outside event,” she said.

Registration can also be done on Saturday. The 5K starts at 10:15 a.m., and the walk starts at 10 a.m.
