OGDENSBURG — Ogdensburg Public Library Director Wayne L. Miller paused Thursday morning to look around at what was to be offered at the annual spring book sale that began Thursday night and runs until Saturday.

In the library’s upstairs auditorium, there were 1,500 books lining the shelves, and about 500 books weighing down four buffet-length sets of tables.

Throw in an estimated 1,000 magazines, 400 videos and compact discs, along with 500 reference books.

“And we’re still unpacking,” Mr. Miller said.

Friends of the Library-sponsored book sales are a way to unload books that no longer circulate and to raise funds to pay for materials and programs at the library, especially for children.

The fall 2011 sale raised about $1,900, which Mr. Miller said is about mid-range.

“We usually run $1,500 to $2,500,” he said.

Every genre is represented in the sale — humor, mystery, fantasy, thriller and romance, to name a few. And there is no shortage of New York Times bestseller-list familiars like Dave Barry, Sidney Sheldon, Patricia Cornwell and Andy Rooney.

Mr. Miller said most buyers know what titles and authors they are looking for and don’t take long to decide.

Some buyers are more discerning.

“We get dealers who find some real gems in here,” Mr. Miller said.

The prices vary by day. Thursday night, hardcovers went for $3 apiece and softcovers, 75 cents each.

Today, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., hardcover books go for $2 each and softcovers for 50 cents. On Saturday, same time, it will be $1 for hardcover books and 25 cents for softcovers.

Today and tomorrow, records are 25 cents each, magazines go for a dime apiece, compacts discs for a dollar each and DVDs for $2 apiece.

The follow-up bag sale on May 5 will offer a bag of books for $2.

The Friends also will offer a U.S. flag in a dollar-a-ticket giveaway.

The library is located at 312 Washington St.
