MASSENA - April 28 of every year is recognized as an International Memorial Day in honor of all those workers who have lost their lives while on the job.

Alcoa’s Massena West Plant had had 19 known hourly workers who were killed on the job.

There is currently a moving memorial bearing 16 names.

The three employees not listed are:

Mr. William Barry, age 46, died June 17, 1948.

Mr. George Munson, age 26, died Dec. 2, 1931.

Mr. Laszlo Kocza, age 44, died July 19, 1931. Could be Mr. Grigor Cosczan. Conflicting reports in paper. This needs to be investigated further for the correct name.

It is United Steelworkers (who represent the hourly employees at the Massena West Plant) Local 420 A’s desire to have a permanent outdoor monument erected with the names of all employees who lost their lives. There are no plant records of those killed between 1902, when the plant opened, and 1938

when records were kept. The union has taken on the task of searching years of old Massena newspaper articles filed on micro-film to find those employees who may not be known as of this writing.

Any additional persons found will have their name, age, and date of death etched onto the black marble memorial with the 19 presently on file.

“United Steelworkers Local 420-A would like to extend our deepest sympathy to those family and friends of our union brothers and sisters, who have lost their lives while making a living for their families and themselves,” Local 42-A President Chris Baldwin said.

“This memorial is the least we can do to honor our fallen brothers and sisters. If anyone has any information of any person who may have been killed on the job at the Massena Alcoa Plant in the past that we don’t have, please contact the union hall at 315-764-0531,” he added.

Anyone who wishes to help by donating to this cause can contact 764-0531 or send your donations to Local 420-A USW, 24 Woodlawn Avenue, Massena, NY 13662.
