Potsdam golfers bounce back from loss to beat FA; N-N gains home sweep


The Potsdam Central golf team bounced back from a season-opening loss to claim a 211-245 Division I decision on the road over Franklin Academy while Norwood-Norfolk got off to a promising start with a sweep at home over Division II rivals Tupper Lake and Heuvelton in NAC meets on Monday.

Potsdam 211, FA 245: Playing the front nine of the East Course at the Malone Country Club, the Sandstoners were led by Ben Stone with a 39. Mike Chambers, Dustin LaValley and Dan Cruikshank all carded 42’s while Konnor Bigwarfe shot a 46 as the sixth man. Dan Stone posted a non-scoring 49.

Davis Sprague paced FA with a 44 followed by Dylan Fleury with a 45 and Elliott Vanier with a 49. Evan Hanna and Dan Sanchez posted rounds of 50 while Alex Sprague finished with a non-scoring 57.

The Sandstoners return to action this afternoon when they look to avenge their loss to OFA at home against the Blue Devils at the Potsdam Town and Country Club starting at 3 p.m.

The lone other NAC Division I meet on Monday saw OFA outshoot Gouverneur 224-257 at the Gouverneur Country Club.


At the Raymondville Country Club, the Flyers gained a 3-2 decision over Tupper Lake while sweeping past Heuvelton 5-0.

Nick Stewart anchored the N-N sweep out of the first match with a medalist round of three-over par 38 that included a birdie on the par-5 eighth hole. Also competing for the Flyers in the order of their matches were Matt Myers (40, birdie on one), Ryan Thomas (49), Anthony Mossow (47) and Cole Davey (47).

For Tupper Lake, Robby Lalonde had a 49 in the first match, Colton Clark, who had birdies on three and five, shot a 39 as the low round for the Lumberjacks in the second.

Rick LaLonde (48), Ben Geiger (52) and Josh Pickering (55) rounded out the starting five for the Lumberjacks.

For Heuvelton, Tyler Otis had a 45 that included a birdie on three. Jacob St. Pierre carded a 51, Jack Tennant a 63, Dedrick Johnson a 64 and Will Tennant a 57.

Competing in exhibition matches were were Schuyler LaBarge for N-N, who shot a 45, Lucas Harper for Heuvelton, who had a 54, and Riley Amell, who had a 45 with a birdie on the third hole.

In the girls division, Tana Morgan shot a 55 for Tupper Lake.

The Flyers are slated to host Brushton-Moira on Wednesday at 3 p.m.


The Yellowjackets opened defense of its Division II NAC crown with a 3.5-1.5 win over Salmon River at Twinbrooks Golf Course.

TJ Roundpoint was medalist on the day for the Shamrocks. Roundpoint beat M-W’s Kyle Bent who fired a 46.

In the other matches, Alex Hammond defeated Jared John 51-59, Josh Tiernan topped Alex Patnode 51-85 and Colby McCall downed Shawn Godard 65-93 to earn the other points for the Yellowjackets. Jeff Mot of M-W split a point with Noah Bero at 49-49.
