Massena VFW holding annual poppy sale

MASSENA - Mayor James F. Hidy signed the official proclamation declaring Thursday, Friday and Saturday “Buddy Poppy Days” in the village.

The proclamation kicks off the annual poppy sale, which serves as one of the largest fundraisers for the Veterans of Foreign Wars post each year.

“All of the money raised goes directly to the care of veterans and their families,” VFW Post 1143 Auxiliary President Patricia Rubado said. “It can’t be used for anything else.”

According to the proclamation signed by Mr. Hidy, the sale of poppies has been an ongoing fundraiser since 1922.

“VFW Buddy Poppies are assembled by disabled veterans, and the proceeds of this worthy fund-raising campaign are used exclusively for the benefit of disabled and needy veterans and the widows and orphans of deceased veterans,” the proclamation read.

Poppies are available “for a donation” at the VFW on East Orvis Street until noon on Saturday.

“It’s an honor for me to do this,” Mr. Hidy said.

Ms. Rubado said this year’s poppy sale is extra special, because Massena’s VFW post will be celebrating its 75th anniversary this fall.

The proclamation also included a statement from Mr. Hidy urging the citizens of the Massena to support the VFW’s efforts.

“I further urge all patriotic citizens to wear a Buddy Poppy as mute evidence of our gratitude to the men and women of this country who have risked their lives in defense of the freedoms which we continue to enjoy as American citizens,” it read.

Following the signing of the proclamation, Mr. Hidy was presented with the post’s first poppy of the year.
