Senior citizen May Festival set for Saturday in Massena

MASSENA - Any St. Lawrence County resident who’s over 50 years old is invited to attend the 41st annual St. Lawrence County Council of Senior Citizens May Festival Saturday at the Massena Community Center, 61 Beach St. It runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

“It’s open to any senior in St. Lawrence County,” event Chair Sylvia Despaw said.

She said the May Festival, which is sponsored by the St. Lawrence County Council of Senior Citizens, involves all of the senior clubs in the county. It’s being hosted by the Massena Senior Citizens.

“There are 17 clubs, from Canton on down to Gouverneur. Some of them are very small,” she said.

The day features a number of activities, she said, ranging from free bingo, door prizes, music by the Starlights, Senior Clubs’ Royalty Parade of Kings and Queens, raffles, club vendor tables, silent auction, cake walk and informational tables.

“We have coffee and doughnuts for a small fee,” Ms. Despaw said.

Free bingo runs from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m., and the Ogdensburg Senior Citizens will provide lunch for a nominal fee.

The Royalty Parade of Kings and Queens begins at 1 p.m.

“They’re selected by their club to represent their club. We have a parade where they dress up in robes,” Ms. Despaw said.

Two hours of music by the Starlights from Ogdensburg will follow the parade, and there will be door prizes, fundraisers and 50/50 drawings in the afternoon.

“Different clubs have different tables to present whatever they want to sell on their table. The clubs provide the prizes,” she said. “It’s just a nice afternoon for everybody.”

There will also be tables set up with a variety of information, such as Office for the Aging and insurances recommended by the Office for the Aging.

“If you want information, come down and have a good time. Sit and have lunch and meet your friends,” Ms. Despaw said.

Awards will be presented during a 4:30 p.m. awards dinner, which is by ticket only and sponsored by the Massena Senior Citizens. Among the awards will be the Jacqueline Sears Award established by the St. Lawrence County Council of Senior Citizens in memory of Jacqueline Sears, the deceased wise of Joe Sears, the former director of the St. Lawrence County Office for the Aging.

“His wife was very active in the senior citizens. They named an award after her and give it out every year to a deserving senior,” Ms. Despaw said.

Door prizes will also be handed out during the dinner.

“We get donations from every florist in St. Lawrence County. They send us a centerpiece and we give them out as door prizes,” she said. “It’s really a very nice day.”

This will be the fourth year the event has been held in Massena. Ms. Despaw said it’s usually held on the first Saturday in May.

“We’ve held it in different places over the years,” she said.
