N-N, Salmon River baseball team generate NAC North Division wins


Norwood-Norfolk shutout Canton while Salmon River knocked off St. Lawrence Central in NAC North Division varsity baseball matchups on Wednesday.

N-N 6, Canton 0: At Vern Burrows Field, Chris Stratton poled two doubles and scored three runs backing up Troy Kovach’s four inning mound win for the host Flyers (3-1, 3-) over the Bears (2-2, 0-2). Kovach struckout four, walked one and allowed two hits. Alex Ploof fanned six in relief allowing one walk and one hit.

Gunnar Brown and Cody Rust each singled twice in the win. Kovach added a single.

Bryant Wentworth, Dan Holcomb and Fracesco Palumbo all singled for Canton. Alex Hayes took the loss.

Salmon River 9, SLC 8: In Fort Covington, the Shamrocks held off a seventh-inning rally by the host Larries to post their first win of the 2012 campaign.

“This is a big confidence booster for this program,” stated SRC Coach Ben Barkley.

Bert Gray went the distance to pick up the win, despite his teammates committing nine errors behind him. Gray allowed just three hits, striking out six with two walks.

Brett Mahoney was saddled with the loss, tossing the first six innings before giving way to Chris Tabor in the seventh. Mahoney allowed six hits, struck out two and walked two as Tabor allowed one hit with two free passes.

Offensively for the Shamrocks, jared Allen went 3-3 with a double and four runs batted in as Christian Duncan added two hits in three plate appearances. Gray and Jordan Wood added a single each with both swiping a base during the win.

SLC singles came off the bats of Tyler Savage, Brady Francis and Devon Agen.


The Norwood-Norfolk modified baseball team opened the season with a 14-4 win on the road over Canton Central on Wednesday. Peter Jarvis threw four scoreless innings to earn the win and aided the N-N cause offensively going 2-2 with a double, single and a walk. Zeb Brown connected for three hits as the modified Flyers turned in a solid defensive performance in their season debut as well.

N-N is slated to play a doubleheader at home against SLC on Friday.


In the two NAC East Division games played Wednesday, Madrid-Waddington blanked Chateaugay 15-0 and Tupper Lake outscored St. Regis Falls 8-5.

M-W 15, Chateaugay 0: Greg Thompson fired a five-inning, one-hit shutout striking out 13 batters for the Jackets (4-0) over the Bulldogs (0-3, 0-2).

Alex Brock supplied the big bat going 3-4 with a four RBI effort for M-W. Other contributions came from: James Hunt (single, 2RBI), Zach Brock (single, double, RBI), Thompson (single, RBI), Jacob Barney (single), Terry Crump (single, RBI), Harrison VanBuren (single, double, RBI) and Austin Scott (single, RBI).

Matt Swanston singled for Chateaugay in the fourth inning.

Tupper Lake 8, SRF 5: Jordan Garrow stroked a double and two singles and scored twice, Adam St. Pierre belted a solo homerun, and Garrett Planty connected two two singles and three RBI to lift the Lumberjacks (3-3, 3-1) past the Saints (0-3). Tim Larkin went six innings for the win striking out nine.

Tim Wheeler connected for two singles for St. Regis Falls. Mike Fraser added a single and an RBI while Kyle Cox and Ryan Duquette each suingled. Wheeler took the loss striking out four in four and two-thirds of work.
