Massena baseball team denies Potsdam

POTSDAM - The Massena Central varsity baseball team scored early but didn’t have to score often in posting a 3-0 win on the road over NAC Central Division rival Potsdam Central on Wednesday.

The Raiders pushed across solo runs in each of their first two at-bats then combined an errorless defensive effort with a dominating performance on the hill by Jake Kormanyos to come away with the key early-season win.

“Jake was the story of the game for us,” noted coach Greg Paquin after tossed a complete-game one-hitter that included seven strikeouts and just one walk.

“He did a good job of spotting his fastball and had great control of his curveball. He really had the Potsdam batters back on their heels the whole game,” he added.

The Raiders opened the scoring in their first at-bat. Cullen Baines led-ff the game by reaching on an error then scored three batters later in front of a two—out single by Zack Rusaw. Massena made it 2-0 in the second. Isaiah Dillabough stroked a one-out single and came around three batters later when Avery Barney ripped a two-out single.

The Raiders then closed out the scoring in their final at-bat. Barney led-off with a single and moved to third after the next two batters were issued walks. Kormanyos then lifted a flyball into the outfield and Barney was able to race home.

Lee Buchanan singled to lead off the game for the Sandstoners but only two other batters would reach base the rest of the game on a walk and a hit-by-pitch.

Brandon Noble gave up 10 hits, fanned three and walked just two in taking the hard-luck loss for the Sandstoners.

Massena (5-1, 2-0) is slated to host a Central Division twinbill against Gouverneur today starting at 4 p.m. while Potsdam (4-2, 1-2) is scheduled to play a doubleheader on Friday at OFA starting at 4 p.m.
