Clayton, Champion to receive federal aid for water, sewer systems

Rep. William L. Owens, D-Plattsburgh, and U.S. Sen. Charles E. Schumer announced Monday that federal funding has been made available to the village of Clayton and town of Champion for water and waste disposal infrastructure improvement projects.

Under the U.S. Department of Agriculture program, Clayton will receive a $470,000 grant and Champion will get $362,000 in grants and a $318,000 low-interest loan through USDA’s Rural Development office, according to a news release.

The $1.15 million awarded to these communities will be used to develop a consolidated water supply source for Champion and rehabilitate existing portions of Clayton’s aging sewer system and pump stations that service village residents, Clayton’s Heritage Heights Sewer District and the Cape Vincent Correctional Facility.

Champion’s USDA loan is to be paid back over 38 years at a 2 percent interest rate.
