WILSON HILL – Mrs. Helen E. Bennett, 89, of 168 River Drive, unexpectedly passed away Wednesday evening, May 2, 2012 at her home.

Helen was born June 2, 1922 in Massena, the daughter of the late George and Edith (Richards) Hazel. She was a graduate of Massena High School. On June 13, 1953, she married Gordon D. Bennett at St. John’s Episcopal Church, Massena with Rev. Purcell, officiating.

She worked Levine’s Store in Massena as a book keeper from 1940 until 1953. She and her husband then moved to the Rochester area, where she worked for Melen Glass Company for seven years. Upon her return the Massena in 1981, she became active in the Massena Memorial Hospital Auxiliary and in the construction of her home on Wilson Hill, which she truly loved.

Helen is survived by her loving husband Gordon D. Bennett; two brothers and sister-in-laws Gordon and Marion Hazel of Massena, Thomas and Clara Hazel of Massena; a sister-in-law Nancy Hazel of Massena; and nieces and nephews.

She is predeceased by her sisters, Mary Billings on December 21, 2004 and Leona Whalen on October 3, 1988; her brothers, Willis C. Hazel on December 20, 2001, Murland B. Hazel on February 19, 1986, Waynard B. Heazel on March 24, 1979, Donald G. Hazel on February 9, 2003, and Raymond Hazel at the age of 3.

Calling hours and funeral services will be held privately at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in Pine Grove Cemetery, Norfolk.
