Following a chase that extended from Clinton County all the way into Lewis and Jefferson counties Sunday, a wanted man was apprehended about 1 a.m. Monday in a West Carthage bar and was being booked into Clinton County jail, Plattsburgh, seven and a half hours later.

Brian G. Aikens, 51, is being held without bail on violation of probation warrants citing grand larceny and possession of stolen property. He additionally faces a petit larceny charge and counts being compiled by state police in connection with his flight to avoid arrest Sunday.

He was arrested in Longshots Bar. Police said patrons and the proprietor acted calmly when they observed that the man who came for a meal appeared to be the man they saw in news reports as a person being sought by police. Troopers responded to the reported sighting and were able to take Mr. Aikens in custody without any more resistance.

A high-speed chase began near Interstate 87 at Plattsburgh about 2 p.m. Sunday after troopers attempted to take him into custody.

Police patrols maintained visual observation of his vehicle until he entered the Lewis County town of Diana, where pursuit was called off. He remained under the observation of a state police helicopter crew from Ray Brook.

The suspect abandoned his car near Crowner Road in the town of Wilna, where he got out and ran. Police patrols arrived there about 9 p.m. to begin a search.
