CANTON - St. Lawrence County legislators passed a resolution in support of the Return the Favor veterans ID program at Monday nights Legislative Board meeting.
The FAVOR (Find and Assist Veterans of Record) program has already been implemented by 35 county clerks in New York state as a way to honor and recognize veterans for their service and sacrifices.
St. Lawrence County Clerk Mary Lou Rupp and Veterans Services Director Michael Boprey, Jr., with the help the local chamber of commerce offices have already signed on 30 businesses who have agreed to participate in the program and offer discounts to veterans. Two local car dealers, Mort Backus & Sons and Blevins Bros., both of Ogdensburg, have also offered their support by covering the expenses involved in implementing the program.
There is no charge to the veterans for the discount card; they just need to come to the County Clerks office to file their military discharge papers (DD-214). They will be issued a card and a list of participating businesses.
The list will also be available on the county website under the County Clerks department. A Return the Favor tab has been created with information about the program as well as the veterans ID application and business enrollment form.
The Clerks office will begin issuing cards at the Military Appreciation Day scheduled on June 16 at Cheel Arena in Potsdam. For further information, contact the County Clerks office at 379-2237.
