CANTON — Village police charged a 22-year-old Maine man with felony weapons possession for allegedly firing guns early Wednesday on the St. Lawrence University campus.

Zachary P. Parker, 22, Wilton, was charged with felony second-degree and two counts of felony third-degree criminal possession of a weapon. He also was charged with a misdemeanor count of fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon.

The charges stem from reported gunshots fired about 3 a.m. at the college’s golf course.

A 9 mm handgun and a shotgun were recovered, and six people have been questioned in the matter, according to police Chief Basil W. Cheney.

Mr. Parker sat quietly in Judge William J. Galvin’s chambers Wednesday during his arraignment, agreeing only that the charges against him are serious.

Mr. Parker was taken to St. Lawrence County jail and held on $3,500 bail or $7,000 bond.

Mr. Cheney said two other people fled from the college’s golf course, but were picked up by state police in Malone.

“They weren’t shooting at or targeting people,” the chief said. “It was just stupid.”

He said the matter involved St. Lawrence University students, but not all of the people were students.

Mr. Cheney said as students begin to finish their finals, there are lots of drinking parties.

He said most people in this case had consumed alcohol.

University officials issued two security alerts Wednesday morning informing students a security officer heard five shots near the golf course.

“We have no reason to believe that anyone is at risk,” the alert said.

A spokeswoman for the college said an internal investigation would begin on whether students may have violated student conduct rules, but those matters would be private.

Despite the state Commission on Judicial Conduct recently censuring a Gouverneur judge for holding court proceedings in his chambers, Judge Galvin said he liked being near his law books and support staff.

“So squeal on me,” Judge Galvin said when asked why he didn’t move the proceeding to a village courtroom.
