State funds will help Ogdensburg Public Library replace windows

Ogdensburg Public Library will get more than $52,000 in state funds to make 45 of the historic building’s windows more energy efficient.

State Sen. Patricia A. Ritchie, R-Heuvelton, announced that the library, located at 312 Washington St. will receive $52,710 from the $14 million New York State Library Construction Fund.

In a prepared statement, the senator explained why the grant program is justified.

“Libraries are being used now, more than ever across New York State, especially right here in Northern New York,” she said. ”These funds will ensure that the public will be able to continue to provide a vital resource, everything from checking out the latest bestseller to conducting research, that the people in our area so heavily depend on.”

Library Director Wayne L. Miller was unavailable Tuesday for comment. But, in preparing the grant application earlier this year, he said the entire replacement and renovation package would cost about $80,000.

The library will have to come up with the remaining $27,000.

The library is currently undergoing a series of improvements including a new roof and interior security ramp-ups. Mr. Miller, his staff and the library’s board of trustees are in the midst of putting together a multi-year master plan that would address several interior and exterior improvements.

Mrs. Ritchie also announced that Hay Memorial Library, Sackets Harbor, would receive $13,624 to help pay for handicapped access, drainage and parking lot security.
