CANTON — Elderly in St. Lawrence County are being targeted by telephone scammers claiming to be from social security offices, according to Sheriff’s deputies.

The scammers ask for personal income, social security number and advise the victim they are eligible for additional benefits, deputies said.

Deputies said they urge people never to give private information over the phone.

Anyone who feels they may be a victim is asked to call the state attorney general’s office at 785-2444.
