FORT DRUM — Several groups will be collecting American flags unfit for display prior to a disposal ceremony in Syracuse.

Flags can be taken either to the post’s Public Affairs Office, Building 10012, or to the Fort Drum Regional Liaison Organization’s office, 200 Washington St., Suite 406, Watertown. Flags will be accepted by the post until May 21.

The flags will be burned at a Memorial Day “Watchfire” ceremony scheduled for May 27 at the New York State Fairgrounds in Syracuse, sponsored by the Central New York chapter of Vietnam Veterans of America.

Federal guidelines stipulate that flags no longer fit for display be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning.
