City marina still has boat slip vacancies

Ogdensburg’s public marina on the St. Lawrence River is open with all but a handful of its 61 boating slips reserved for the summer.

Parks and Recreation Director Matthew J. Curatolo said Friday that, as of Thursday, 26 of the 27 slips wired for power are gone for the season which began May 1 and ends Oct. 1. The one-time charge is $693, or $33 per foot of boat length.

Nine out of the 34 non-power slips are left. Their rate is $567, or $27 per foot of boat length.

Mr. Curatolo said the number of vacancies reflected an apparent trend by many of the marina’s patrons who traditionally come back year after year.

“There were a lot of people who chose not to come back,” he said. “Some sold their boats. Others were dealing with broken-down boats. And others felt they couldn’t afford a slip this year. This is not a new thing.”

Another sign that several repeat renters weren’t coming back this summer was the fact that Mr. Curatolo resorted to the marina waiting list to fill vacant slips.

Nine new renters came from a list of 15 names.

The marina also has nine transient slips for temporary or overnight boaters.

Two of them have power and charge $1 per foot of boat length. The other four are non-power and charge 75 cents per foot of boat length.

Two other marinas will be open this summer, both of them privately run and on West River Street along the Oswegatchie River. They are the 60-slip Hosmer Marina and the 47-slip marina at the former Ramada Inn.

Mr. Curatolo isn’t worried about the marinas siphoning business from one another.

“To my mind, there are enough boats for all of the marinas,” he said.

Those interested in renting a boat slip are asked to call the Parks and Recreation Department at 393-1980.
