The Massena Central and Potsdam Central baseball teams geared up for their rematch on Monday by posting key NAC Central Division wins Friday afternoon.
Massena 8, OFA 3: For the second time in as many days, the Raiders overcame a slow start before going on to claim a quality mid-season win at home over a Central Division rival.
I hope we dont make a habit of falling behind early, noted coach Greg Paquin after the Raiders improved to 5-0 atop the division standings and 11-1 overall. We just did a very good job of putting the bat on the ball against some very good pitching.
Jake Kormanyos went the distance for the win, shutting down the Blue Devils over the final six innings after surrendering three runs on five hits in the first inning. He finished with three strikeouts and four walks while scattering two hits the rest of the way. Breton LaRose (1K, 2BB) worked the hill the first three innings in taking the loss and gave way to reliever Alex Farrell (3K, 1BB) with OFA trailing 6-3.
In the first inning, Pat Cosmo drew a walk. Brandon Arsenault, Konnor Murdock, LaRose, Seth Pinkerton and Jon Tayler all connected for singles to drive home Cosmo, Arsenault and Murdock before LaRose was thrown out at the plate in front of the hit by Tayler to end the inning.
The Raiders countered with two runs in their half of the first the put together a four-run rally in the third before going on to add solo runs in the fourth and sixth innings. Jake Ward led the way offensively going 2-2 with three RBI. Josh Miller singled drive and drove in a run. Cullen Baines and Avery Barney both singled and came around to score twice while Kormanyos and David Phillips had the other hits.
Arsenault and Tayler both finished with two hits in the losing cause.
The Raiders were scheduled to play a non-league game against Indian River today but that contest was cancelled. They return to action on Monday at home against Central Division rival Potsdam starting at 4:30 p.m.
Potsdam 7, Franklin Academy 4: In Malone, the Huskies committed five errors, issued four walks and hit two batters in falling to 2-2 in the NAC Central, 8-2 overall.
Ben Miller picked up the win, striking out eight FA batters as Austin Lamay suffered the loss. Alex Johnson pitched in relief for FA.
Trevor Keleher led the Sandstoners (2-2, 7-2) with two hits as Lee Buchanan doubled and Shawn Clark tripled during the win.
Johnson paced the Huskies at the plate with a single and triple as solo hits came off the bats of Lamay, Derek Juntunen, Bruce Monette III, Brandon Welch, Shawn Mulverhill, Taylor Hilyard and Jordan Yando.
In a pair of NAC East Division twinbills on Friday, Parishville-Hopkinton and Chateaugay played to a split while St. Regis Falls swept Edwards-Knox 10-4, 9-7.
Chateaugay 4-1, P-H 1-3: Joe McGillicuddy one-hit the Panthers in the opening game as the visting Bulldogs scored twice in the second and twice in the fifth before the Panthers managed their only run in bottom of the fifth. McGillicuddy had eight strikeouts and walked just won to earn the decision over Zach Newton, who had six strikeouts and walked none while giving up five hits.
Garrett LaBare singled twice, drove in a run and scored another to pace the Chateaugay offense. Cody Patnode and McGillicuddy both singles and scored solo runs.
Mike Burns singled in the fourth inning to account for the lone P-H hit. Tyler Gallagher scored the only run when his attempted steal of thirdbase led to an overthrow and allowed him time to race home.
The Panthers bounced back from their first division loss by building an early lead and making it stand for a 3-1.
Burns went the distance for the win, striking out six and walking none as the Panthers pushed across all their runs in the top of the first inning then gave up a solo run in the bottom of the fourth to reverse the Bulldogs. LaBare had six strikeouts and one walk in taking the loss.
The Panthers produced the majority in their first at-bat where Gallagher, Phil Huckins and Newton opened with three straight hits. After two strikeouts and a walk, Franklin Pullano stepped up to deliver a third RBI-single to score Newton. Gallagher, Huckins scored the other runs. Huckins and Newton generated the other RBI. Parker Meashaw doubled and Derek Remington singled to account for the other P-H hit.
Matt Swanston drove home LaBare with the lone Chateaugay run.
The Panthers are slated to host a doubleheader against Madrid-Waddington on Tuesday starting at 4 p.m.
In the only NAC interdivisional game on Friday, Gouverneur beat St. Lawrence Central 5-2.
A three run second inning made it 5-1 and Cody Woods kept the Larries in check pitching a no hitter through five innings of play, The junior finished with a two hitter striking out nine and was backed by Michael Lucidis 2-3 effort with two RBI, Matt Ashleys 1-2 day with an RBI and Levi Loves 1-3 performance with two RBI.
Tyler Savage struckout four and allowed six hits in taking the setback. Devon Agen and Donovan Patraw each singled for SLC.
The NAC West Division games had Heuvelton beating Hermon-Dekalb 25-3 and Lisbon downing Clifton-Fine 10-3.
