Watertown graduate Hughes stars at SJF
ROCHESTER Sophomore Taylor Hughes, a 2010 graduate of Watertown High School, recently set a St. John Fisher College single-season goal-scoring mark.
Hughes scored four goals in the Cardinals 9-8 overtime victory over SUNY Fredonia in the first round of the NCAA Division III Championships on Wednesday, giving her 70 on the year, a program record. Hughes also currently holds the record for points in a season with 98.
Hughes scored her second goal at 2 minutes, 50 seconds into the second half, knotting the score at 4-4 against the Blue Devils. SUNY Fredonia would then push its lead to 6-4 before Melissa Leonhard scored off a pass from Hughes with 15:59 left in the game to close the margin again to just one.
Hughess fourth goal with 2:46 left in regulation tied the game at 8-8 and forced overtime. Hughes also added three assists for seven points overall.
Hughes played three years of varsity lacrosse at Watertown, helping the Cyclones to two Section 3 championships and a New York State final four appearance.
The Cardinals (15-4), whose victory total is a school single-season record, face top-ranked Salisbury (Md.) State today in a second-round contest.
