POTSDAM — The more time that passes without an arrest in the murder of 12-year-old Garrett J. Phillips, the more awareness of the case his family is trying to raise.

Garrett’s uncle, Brian A. Phillips, said it’s not about criticizing the police, but about letting everyone know the family is still waiting for justice.

“It’s rather hard waking up every day knowing the person is still out there,” Mr. Phillips said.

He said a reward is in the works for information leading to a conviction. Information on the amount will be finalized this week, he said.

Garrett was found unconscious Oct. 24 at North Country Manor Apartments, 100 Market St., after neighbors heard screams and cries for help. He was pronounced dead that evening at Canton-Potsdam Hospital.

Since his death, police have not named any suspects and have made very little public comment, saying only that the investigation is continuing. Police have said that the case lacks an eyewitness but that the investigation is focused on one person.

In January, Clarkson University men’s head soccer coach Oral “Nick” Hillary filed a notice of claim against the village for his treatment in the murder investigation. In his notice, Mr. Hillary stated that the police wrongfully named him as a suspect. A lawsuit has yet to be filed.

Mr. Phillips said it will take more than an arrest to bring closure.

“Our lives have changed forever,” Mr. Phillips said. “But the killer isn’t bothered at all.”
