Massena girls lacrosse team clinches NAC banner repeat


The Massena Central varsity girls lacrosse team remained unbeaten with a convincing win on the road over Saranac Lake while Potsdam Central took over sole possession of second place by reversing Canton Central at home in NAC matchups on Monday.

Massena 18, Saranac Lake 4: The visiting Lady Raiders worked their way to a 10-4 halftime lead then rattled off eight unanswered goals in the second half to move to 10-0 and clinch a second straight regular season title.

Erin Francis and Megan Poupore sparked the winning attack with five goals and two assists each. Shannon Casey (1 assist) and Courtney Manley added two goals apiece while Dominique Valancius (1 assist) Kallie Barnes, Carlie Leary and Alanna Pyke all struck for solo goals and Steffanie Premo notched a solo assist.

Laura Stanton, Kylie Sapone, Kaileigh Woodruff and Elena Beideck broke through for the Saranac Lake (3-8, 3-7) goals.

The Lady Raiders, now 11-2 overall, close out the regular season on Wednesday at Heuvelton starting at 4 p.m.

Potsdam 10, Canton 5: At the Potsdam turf field, the host Lady Sandstoners overcame an early deficit with a five-goal run before going on to convincingly avenge a loss to the Lady Golden Bears.

Keely Rice led the way offensively for Potsdam with five goals and three assists. Kalie Grant chipped in three goals while Micheala Cole and Jenny Tardelli each netted singletons as the Lady Sandstoners worked their way to an 8-4 halftime lead then kept Canton from grabbing any second-half momentum by striking for the first two goals of the second half.

Alicia Jones paced the Canton attack with a trio of goals while Tess Knights struck for the other two.

Katelyn Bloom was counted on to make two saves backstopping the win while Megan Howard turned aside five shots working the Canton (7-5, 6-4) crease.

The Lady Sandstoners (7-6, 7-3) are slated to host Salmon River today at 5 p.m.

OFA 15, Heuvelton 10: In Ogdensburg, the Lady Blue Devils rallied from a 5-2 halftime deficit to turn back their Route 812 rivals.

Molly Morrow dissected the Heuvelton defense for eight goals and two assists to lead the winning attack while Hunter Shaver struck for two goals and two helpers.

Erica Chase made four saves as OFA moved to 6-7 overall and 6-5 in the NAC.

Emilie Ross scored five goals to lead the Bulldogs (3-7) and Shastine Crobar netted a pair of goals. Jackie Sovie, Aliza Armstrong and Alison Akins all scored solo goals and Megan Hamilton stopped six shots in goal.
