LISBON — The state Department of Environmental Conservation is responding to an oil spill in the St. Lawrence River that originated from a McCabe Road camp.

DEC Region 6 spill engineer Gary P. McCullouch said Tuesday that the spill occurred Friday and a contractor was called Saturday to begin cleanup. He said the spill is not significant, at 15 to 20 gallons of fuel, but it is enough to cause a sheen on the water and a bothersome smell for neighbors.

He declined to name the property owner or give an exact address. The owner was identified by a neighbor as Lawrence F. Montroy.

Mr. McCullouch said the property owner notified DEC of the spill Friday evening and a crew was on site Saturday morning to start the cleanup.

“We are not looking at this as a negligence type of situation,” Mr. McCullouch said.

He said most of the oil dumped directly into the river but the current is causing a small amount of it to soak into the ground of neighboring properties.

“There is a small amount of oil continuing to bubble out,” he said.
