MADRID - Madrid Town Justice Jennifer Appleby has resigned.
Town Supervisor Joseph A. Finnegan said Thursday that Ms. Appleby resigned for personal reasons effective May 31.
Ms. Appleby, who was town justice for 20 years, drew an annual salary of $15,000.
The board appointed Waddington Town Justice Lawrence Sears to replace her until Dec. 31. An election in November will choose a successor for a full, four-year term.
Republican St. Lawrence County Board of Elections Commissioner Thomas A. Nichols said Thursday that interested candidates can pick up nominating petitions at the board office, 48 Court St., Canton, beginning June 5. They will have to be turned in during mid-July, the exact date yet to be determined.
Mr. Finnegan said that the justice must be a town resident.
