MADRID — Madrid Town Justice Jennifer Appleby has resigned her position from the local bench, effective May 31.

Town Supervisor Joseph A. Finnegan said Thursday that Ms. Appleby resigned for personal reasons.

Ms. Appleby, who was town justice for 20 years, was paid $15,000 a year.

The board appointed Waddington Town Justice Lawrence Sears to replace Ms. Appleby until Dec. 31. There will have to be an election in November to choose a successor who will serve a full, four-year term.

Republican St. Lawrence County Board of Elections Commissioner Thomas A. Nichols said Thursday that interested candidates can pick up nominating petitions at the board office, 48 Court St., Canton, beginning June 5.
