Village police charge Massena man with DWI, leaving scene after Rt. 37 crash

MASSENA - A Barnhart Road man faces driving while intoxicated charges after allegedly driving without a license and leaving the scene of a personal injury accident at 7:55 p.m. Saturday on state Route 37 at Barnhart Road.

Village police arrested Nathan J. Justin, 25, of 298 Barnhart Road, at 10:26 p.m. on Barnhart Road, charging him with DWI, passing a red light, no seat belt-passenger, leaving the scene of a personal injury accident, speed not reasonable and operating without a license.

Police said Justin, driving a 2000 Pontiac Sunfire registered to Lindsay Brainard, alsoof 298 Barnhart Road was southbound on Bayley Road when he allegedly failed to stop at a red light and collided with a Ford 150 pickup truck being operated by Edward T. Mashaw, 52, of 114 Oak St., Ogdensburg. The collision drove the truck into the curb and a road sign.

Two passengers in the Mashaw vehicle - Darlene M. Mashaw, 52, and Alan Redmond, 44 - were transported to Massena Memorial Hospital by Massena Rescue for treatment of injuries they received in the crash.

Police said Justin, who was taken into custody two and a half hours after the accident after reportedly running from the accident scene, had a blood alcohol content of 0.12 percent. A blood alcohol content of 0.08 percent or high constitutes a driving while intoxicated offense in New York state.
