Waddington man steals while wife recovers from emergency surgery

MASSENA - A 24-year-old man Waddington man has been jailed after being charged with stealing a credit card when he was in the Massena Memorial Hospital’s emergency room when he was changing into scrubs so he could observe the birth of his baby.

Village police charged Floyd H. Smith Jr. of 555 Irish Settlement Road with six felony counts of first-degree forgery, seven counts of petit larceny, three counts of attempted petit larceny fourth-degree grand larceny and fourth-degree criminal possession of stolen property at 9:56 p.m. Sunday.

He was arraigned by Massena Village Justice Eric J. Gustafson and sent to the St. Lawrence County Correctional Facility with bail set at $10,000 cash or $20,000 bond.

Smith is charged with stealing a Discover credit from hospital employee Paul E, Auger’s wallet while in the men’s locker room at Massena Memorial Hospital at approximately 3 a.m. May 14.

Mr. Auger, in the statement he provided police, said he had been called into work for an emergency C-section at 3 a.m. May 14 and had gone into the locker room to change into his scrubs.

He noted hopsital staff had broguth the father into the locker room sometime after 3 a.m. that morning so he could join the baby’s mother in the operating room. He said he discovered his wallet missing when he returned to the locker room and pointed out his Discover card had been used at 5:01 a.m. that day when he was still working in the emergency room.

Smith is charged with forging Mr. Auger’s name on checks he cashed for $34.40 at 5:01 a.m. May 14 at Sunoco, $61.74 at 7:55 a.m. May 14 at Walmart, $65.11 at 8 a.m. May 14 at Walmart, $2.01 at 1:26 p.m. May 14 at Walmart, $20.04 at 10:59 a.m. May 15 at Sunoco, $41.74 at 11:10 a.m. May 15 at Walmart and $91.41 at 11:14 a.m. May 15 at Walmart.

He is also charged with attempting to use the credit card for a $62.01 purchase at 1:25 p.m. May 16 at Walmart, a $102.50 purtchase at 7:49 a.m. May 14 at Sunoco and a $19.02 purchase at 8:45 p.m. May 15 at Walmart.
