The Watertown High School baseball team and Sandy Creek softball team received No. 1 seeds as the Section 3 tournament seedings were announced on Sunday.
WHS (15-5), which went unbeaten in the Frontier League and has lost only to Oswego since coming back from Myrtle Beach, S.C., on spring vacation, earned an unexpected top seed in the tough Class AA bracket. The Cyclones will play host to either No. 9 Oswego (7-10) or No. 8 Syracuse East (12-8) in a quarterfinal game on Thursday at the Alex T. Duffy Fairgrounds. Those two teams meet in a first-round game today.
Twelve other Frontier League teams also made the field, with first-round games slated for Tuesday.
Sandy Creeks girls (18-2), winners of the Frontier League C Division, are top-seeded in Class C-2. The Comets received a first-round bye and will host either No. 9 Waterville or No. 8 Mohawk in a quarterfinal game on Thursday.
In addition, 12 other Frontier League teams qualified for the sectional softball tournament.
South Lewis earned a No. 2 seed in Class C-1, while Lowville is seeded third in Class B-2 and Sackets Harbor is No. 3 in Class D.
The Frontier League C Division champion Falcons (16-2) open sectional play against a familiar foe in Thursdays quarterfinals when No. 7 Thousand Islands (9-8) travels to Turin.
Lowville (14-4) also will play host to a Frontier League foe, No. 11 General Brown (6-9), in a quarterfinal game on Thursday.
Sackets Harbor (15-3) awaits the No. 11 Cincinnatus/No. 6 Oriskany winner in a quarterfinal home game on Thursday.
In other games:
Class A, No. 9 Carthage (5-13) travels to No. 8 Oneida (6-11) for a first-round game on Tuesday.
Class B-1, Immaculate Heart Central (10-7) is at No. 2 Homer (10-7) for a quarterfinal game on Thursday. No. 4 South Jefferson (11-8) is home against No. 5 Vernon-Verona-Sherrill (13-5) in a Thursday quarterfinal.
Class C-1, No. 5 Beaver River (12-6) is at No. 4 Pulaski (12-4) in a Thursday quarterfinal.
Class C-2, No. 6 Sandy Creek (8-1) visits No. 3 West Canada Valley (11-5) in a Thursday quarterfinal.
Class D, No. 9 Copenhagen (9-7) plays a first-round game at No. 8 Hamilton and No. 10 Alexandria (7-10) has a first-round date at No. 7 Poland on Tuesday.
Semifinals in all classes are scheduled for Saturday, with finals played at Alliance Bank Stadium in Syracuse and DeLutis Field in Rome throughout next week.
General Brown (17-3) received the No. 3 seed in Class B and will play host to No. 13 Cazenovia in a first-round game on Thursday.
Also in Class B, No. 9 South Jefferson (14-6) is at No. 8 Westhill and No. 5 Altmar-Parish-Williamstown (13-5) is home against No. 12 Canastota on Thursday.
In Class A, Indian River (10-6) is the No. 5 seed and plays at No. 4 East Syracuse-Minoa in a first-round game on Thursday.
In Class C-1, No. 8 Beaver River (7-10) hosts No. 9 Tully in a first-round game on Tuesday. No. 6 Thousand Islands (12-8) is at No. 3 Little Falls and No. 4 South Lewis (12-7) is home to No. 5 Sauquoit Valley in Thursday quarterfinals.
Five area teams made the Class D field, led by No. 6 Alexandria (12-4), which host No. 11 Brookfield in Thursdays first round. Also, No. 9 LaFargeville (8-9) is at No. 8 Poland, No. 10 Copenhagen (9-10) is at No. 7 Madison, No. 13 Belleville Henderson plays at No. 4 Oriskany and No. 15 Immaculate Heart Central is at No. 3 New York Mills.
Semifinals in Class C and quarterfinals in all other classes are slated for Saturday. Class C-1 and C-2 finals are May 30, with semifinals in the other classes that day. The class finals are June 2 at Hopkins Road Field in Liverpool.
